How do I excel at managing my people?

24th April 2019
Presented by John Berry & Sue Berry

Less than 20% of all managers in the UK are trained to do the job. And yet people-management is non-obvious. It’s to be learned.

This workshop comes at the end of a six-session series of manager development webinars. It aims to review all the main points raised in the webinars, adding meaning and explaining the management science further.

You will be able to identify from this workshop, areas where you are already proficient and others where you need further development and support.

Refer to our overview description of our Level 7 Manager Development Programme for full information.

Topics for discussion

We will introduce systems dynamics as a business tool for use in HR and OD. We will discuss the ideas of causality in managing people and how it is that many variables interrupt the simple idea that one thing causes another, thereby creating complexity.

In addition, we will review the past webinars covering the following topics:

  • Contracts of employment
  • Psychological contract
  • Commitment
  • Innovation (climate)
  • Engagement
  • Culture change
  • Reward
  • Objective setting and management
  • Motivation
  • Leadership

We will be soliciting questions from webinar attendees on those topics.

Our aim is to have delegates leave with a good understanding of the issues and the ability to use the tools discussed.

NOTE: You can participate online instead of attending in person. Please book up below and then send an email to say you want to join the workshop online.

Who’s this workshop aimed at?

Managers who want to excel in managing their people.

What will you learn?

Valid, tangible and immediately applicable information and methods to enable you to excel in managing your people.

What’s the workshop style?

A group of like-minded managers sharing the problem but encouraged and enabled by some short presentations based on webinar material and issues from that material.

  • 09:30 - Arrive, coffee & Danish pastries
  • 10:00 - Presentations and round-table discussions
  • 12:00 - Depart

In this simultaneous online and face-to-face meeting, we’ll review the complete activity of management and emphasise the use of two key models for day to day manager use.

We'll feature use of systems dynamics for pan-organisational modelling to understand the big picture in having managers excel.

By the close, you’ll understand the changes that you might make to your own management approaches as you aim to cause change in employee action.
